創作背景：方文山選用一九四三的這個年份來做為歌詞故事的時空背景，是有其原因的。1943年，台灣眷村裡有很多老兵，這些老兵因戰亂逃難到台灣之後，和父母一隔就是好幾十年，直到開放探親，他們終於回到了大陸，不過父母親可能早已不在了。回到老家，只能單憑泛黃的舊照，看看父母親當年熱戀時神采飛揚的臉龐、在上海灘活躍的點滴時光，或是看著家裡老舊牆瓦找尋失去的記憶。方文山是受眷村那些老伯父的影響，體會到他們內心無限的落寞與感慨所引發的靈感。

《彌賽亞》的首演在1742年4月13日於愛爾蘭首都都柏林舉行，雖然這時候亨德爾的經濟條件很不好，但是他還是毅然決定將首演辦為公益演出，不帶任何盈利性。當時的海報上寫著「為了一些困苦的囚犯，以及梅爾舍醫院的利益而演出」。結果這次首演取得了很大成功，聽眾無不被作品所感染。很快，消息傳到英國首都倫敦，人們紛紛要求一睹為快。1743年《彌賽亞》在倫敦上演，英王喬治二世親臨劇院，當第二部分終曲《哈里路亞》奏響時，國王按捺不住心中的激動，站起來聽完了全曲。由此，《哈里路亞》要站著聆聽，便作為一條不成文的規定一直延續到今天。最後演出再次獲得轟動，在經歷了長久的沉寂後，亨德爾終於依靠《彌賽亞》取得了事業上的又一個高峰。
這首樂曲是西方聖誕節必演的保留曲目，其中第二樂章的最後一首Hallelujah(哈利路亞）應該是大家所熟悉的

柴科夫斯基說：「亨德爾處理聲部的技巧是無與倫比的大師，他向來不勉強使用合唱的聲部手段，從來不超過聲區的自然范圍。他在合唱曲中創作出其他作曲家從來也做不到的絕妙的宏偉效果。」《彌賽亞》共57個分曲，其中混聲四部合唱廿首，混聲五部合唱曲一首。清唱劇《彌賽亞》分為三個部分。第一部分敘述耶穌誕生的經過，叫《預言與成就》；第二部分表現耶穌傳布福音以及受難的經過，叫《受難與得勝》；第三部分是寫耶穌復活的事，叫《復活與光榮》。每個部分都以合唱曲作為結束，最後在壯麗宏偉的賦格大合唱《阿門頌》中結束全曲。
