萬聖節是諸聖節（All Saints』 Day）的俗稱，本是天主教等基督宗教的宗教節日，時回間是11月1日。天主教把諸聖節答定為彌撒日，每到這一天，除非有不可抗拒的理由，否則所有信徒都要到教堂參加彌撒，緬懷已逝並升入天國的所有聖人，特別是那些天主教歷史上的著名聖人。
緊隨諸聖節之後的是11月2日的諸靈節（All Souls』 Day），這一天緬懷的則是已逝但還未升入天國的靈魂，信徒們會祈禱他們早日升天。
萬聖節前夕，在每年的10月31日，是西方的傳統節日。許多亞洲地區的人將萬聖節前夕誤稱為萬聖節。
萬聖節前夜源自古代凱爾特民族（Celtic）的新年節慶，此時也是祭祀亡魂的時刻，在避免惡靈干擾的同時，也以食物祭拜祖靈及善靈以祈平安渡過嚴冬。前一天晚上（也就是萬聖節前夜），小孩們會穿上化妝服，戴上面具，挨家挨戶收集糖果。
