這首詩歌的作者莎拉女士(Sarah Flower Adams,1805-1848) 她的父親Benjamin Flower是一位很優秀並勇敢的記者,當年因寫了幾篇政治文章而入獄,有許多支持者都到獄中去探望,因此認識了她母親,出獄後兩人便結婚,並且生下了姊姊(Eliza)與她,可惜母親結婚僅十年便過世,兩位幼女在父親的養育下,後來都相當有成就,巧合的是他們兩人竟然都只活了四十三歲。
莎拉於二十九歲那年,嫁給了一位工程師,由於她是位身材高挑的美女,又喜歡音樂,更期望藉戲劇反映人生,並達到宗教目的,因此便熱愛於舞台上的演出,而丈夫也相當支持她的決定,所以曾成功的主演過歌劇"馬克白夫人",可惜後來她因體弱多病,不得不放下舞台而轉向文學創作去發展。
這首"與主更親近"之創作靈感,主要是根據創世記中,雅各為逃避以掃的憤怒,離鄉而來到荒僻的曠野。到了晚上,他以石為枕在那裡躺卧,並且夢見天梯....,於是體驗到親近主的寶貴而寫下了這首詩,發表於1840年,當時還未受到肯定,直到1856年,作曲家孟遜博士為它譜曲之後,才廣受大家肯定及喜愛。
通常大家喜歡將這首詩歌用於追思禮拜,乃是由於1901年9月美國大總統麥根萊(W. Mckinley)遇刺身亡,由於生前喜歡這首歌,於是全國為他舉行追悼會時,都選唱這首歌,而廣被效尤。另外於1913年4月10日,號稱永不沈沒的最大郵輪"鐵達尼號"(Titanic), 因觸礁還是沈沒了,一千餘人在最後葬身前,仍在樂隊伴奏下壯烈的唱出這首歌乃最為感人。
