如何为音乐剧下定义，这一基本得不能再基本的问题不仅困惑着中国人，也让许多外国专家百思不得其解。

德国著名的音乐剧史学家鲁狄杰•柏林(Rüdiger Bering)在其专著《音乐剧》一书的前言中就无奈地写到：“在音乐剧一百多年的发展中，它经历了风格各异的形式，很难下一个完整而确切的定义。首先，音乐剧没有单一的音乐风格——从科特•威尔(Kurt Weill)《街头景象》中的歌剧特征到弗雷德里克•洛维《窈窕淑女》中的小歌剧风格，以及列昂纳德•伯恩斯坦(Leonado Bernstein)《西区故事》中带有爵士灵感的音乐和高尔特•麦克德尔莫特(Galt Macdermot)《长发》中的摇滚音乐，音乐风格可谓千变万化。其次，就配器而言，从古典管弦乐队、爵士乐队到摇滚乐队也是变化无穷。另外，大多数音乐剧中，歌唱与对白都交替进行，但也有一些作品很接近歌剧，只有很少的台词，例如安德鲁•洛依德•韦伯(Andrew Lloyd Webber)的《艾薇塔》。因此，要区分音乐剧与其他音乐作品类型并非易事。”〔引自《音乐剧》，鲁狄杰•柏林(Rudiger Bering)/著，黑龙江美术出版社2001年8月版，前言。〕

其实，说到给音乐剧定义，首先必须提到著名音乐剧作词人奥斯卡•小哈姆斯坦(Oscar Hammerstein Ⅱ)的一句话，他说：“It can be anything it wants to be. There is only one thing a musical absolutely must have - music.”(它是你所能想到的任何元素。其中，只有一个因素是音乐剧绝对包括的，这就是音乐!)现在看来，这段数十年前说的话迄今仍然具有重要的启迪意义。每部音乐剧尽管对戏剧、音乐和舞蹈侧重点不同，比如《巴黎圣母院》是以唱为主的，《爱的接触》是以跳为主的，《屋顶上的提琴手》是以戏剧为主的，唱、跳、演都要有，表演如果不成功，你唱得再好，跳得再好，演不好也不成，但它们无疑都是音乐剧，音乐是它的灵魂。显然，这其实是如何定义的问题。

要准确地把握音乐剧这个概念，还得从英文“musical”的变迁开始说起。这种来自西方的文化本身就有其复杂的演变历史过程，各个不同文化的时代背景创造出的文化，只有从历史角度去叙述才比较可行。

一般地说，Musical一族里，主要有两大类：一类是音乐喜剧(musical comedy)和以剧情为主的叙事音乐剧(book musical)〔也可译为“古典音乐剧”或“剧本音乐剧”。〕，一类是综艺秀(vaudeville)和时事秀(revue)。

Alfred带着冻僵的教授来到了犹太人Chagal和Rebecca夫妇的小旅店。Abronsius苏醒之后，发现屋子里挂着好多大蒜，村民们正唱着大蒜的颂歌。他认为这个地方有吸血鬼出没，但是他的猜测遭到了村民的否认。
Chagal把Alfred领到客房。Alfred想在附近转转，不小心闯进了浴室，浴盆里有个非常漂亮的女孩，她是店主的女儿Sarah。原来Sarah和Alfred的卧室就隔着这一间浴室。Sarah对这个不知所措的年轻科学家颇有好感，因为他与她平时见到的山野村夫不同，而Alfred更是对这美丽的女孩一见钟情。但这个时候，并非只有Alfred一个人注意到了Sarah的美貌，阴影中还有另一双眼睛——von Krolock伯爵，他是附近一座城堡的主人，他是一个吸血鬼！
夜深了，Alfred和Sarah在辗转反侧地思念着对方。教授发现店主Chagal蹑手蹑脚地溜进了女仆Magda的卧室。

当天夜里，Magda偷偷下楼来看Chagal的尸体，因为她觉得他死得蹊跷。忽然，Chagal一跃而起，死死咬住了Magda的咽喉。随后，他用原先盖在自己身上的布遮住Magda的尸体，自己则躲到了桌子底下。一会儿，教授和Alfred来了，他们要刺穿裹尸布下尸体的心脏。在最后一刻，他们制服了桌子底下的Chagal。Chagal请求教授放过他，并表示愿意领他们到吸血鬼的城堡去。

第二幕

第二天早晨，从恶梦中惊醒的Alfred决定去找Sarah，带她离开。教授来了，他现在精力充沛，迫不及待地要开始行动。Alfred只好先陪他去搜查城堡的地窖。
半路上，教授被栅栏挂住了，怎么也挣不脱，Alfred只好独自工作。他打开两具石棺，发现伯爵和Herbert直挺挺地躺在里面。教授让Alfred刺穿他们的心脏， Alfred却没这本领。Alfred解开教授，打算寻找另一条进入地窖的路。他们离开后不久，一具木棺材的盖子开了，出来的是Chagal和Magda。

教授和Alfred来到了城堡的图书馆，教授被丰富的藏书吸引，全神贯注地看起书来，一时忘了消灭吸血鬼的事，也没有注意到Alfred离开了。
Alfred听到了Sarah熟悉的歌声，他循着声音找去，在一间豪华的浴室里找到了Sarah，她正在为晚上的舞会作准备。Alfred恳求Sarah跟他逃走，但Sarah被伯爵迷住了，根本不听Alfred的劝告。Alfred绝望了，但是他对Sarah的爱并没有动摇。
Alfred回到图书馆，向教授求助。但教授一心扑在书上，没给他的助手好建议。Alfred只好找了本《恋人必读》来看，书里的建议使他又燃起了希望。这时，他似乎又听到了Sarah的声音，于是他又回到浴室。
在浴室里等着他的不是Sarah，而是Herbert。Herbert拉着Alfred跳起华尔兹。Alfred无意间瞥了一眼镜子，大惊失色：镜子里没有Herbert的影子！关键时刻，教授出现了，他用雨伞打倒Herbert，救了Alfred。
教授和Alfred登上城堡的塔楼。忽然伯爵出现在他们面前。伯爵恭维教授，表示自己是他的崇拜者，又引诱Alfred离开教授跟随他，随后便消失在夜色中。过了一会儿，教授和Alfred发现下面的墓地里有动静。只见一个个坟墓打开了，尸体爬了出来，他们把棺盖推到一边，浩浩荡荡地向舞厅进军。当所有的人都离开了墓地，伯爵又一次出现了，他沉思着在一座座坟墓之间游荡，回忆着他无数的情人，她们都已被他变成吸血鬼。他自白道：一旦发现喜欢的，就要将她毁灭，他越想压制自己的贪欲，它们反而越强烈。
在城堡的大厅里，午夜舞会开始了。Alfred和教授打晕了两个吸血鬼，装扮成他们的样子混在当中。伯爵将Sarah介绍给宾客，并宣布舞会开始。轻歌曼舞中，伯爵开始吸Sarah的血。不久，吸血鬼们发现舞厅的镜面墙上只有Sarah，Alfred和教授有影子。伯爵命令众吸血鬼把这三个人吸干。最后，Alfred和教授用两根蜡烛搭成十字架，赶走了吸血鬼，带着Sarah逃离了城堡。
