创作背景：方文山选用一九四三的这个年份来做为歌词故事的时空背景，是有其原因的。1943年，台湾眷村里有很多老兵，这些老兵因战乱逃难到台湾之后，和父母一隔就是好几十年，直到开放探亲，他们终于回到了大陆，不过父母亲可能早已不在了。回到老家，只能单凭泛黄的旧照，看看父母亲当年热恋时神采飞扬的脸庞、在上海滩活跃的点滴时光，或是看着家里老旧墙瓦找寻失去的记忆。方文山是受眷村那些老伯父的影响，体会到他们内心无限的落寞与感慨所引发的灵感。

《弥赛亚》的首演在1742年4月13日于爱尔兰首都都柏林举行，虽然这时候亨德尔的经济条件很不好，但是他还是毅然决定将首演办为公益演出，不带任何盈利性。当时的海报上写着“为了一些困苦的囚犯，以及梅尔舍医院的利益而演出”。结果这次首演取得了很大成功，听众无不被作品所感染。很快，消息传到英国首都伦敦，人们纷纷要求一睹为快。1743年《弥赛亚》在伦敦上演，英王乔治二世亲临剧院，当第二部分终曲《哈里路亚》奏响时，国王按捺不住心中的激动，站起来听完了全曲。由此，《哈里路亚》要站着聆听，便作为一条不成文的规定一直延续到今天。最后演出再次获得轰动，在经历了长久的沉寂后，亨德尔终于依靠《弥赛亚》取得了事业上的又一个高峰。
这首乐曲是西方圣诞节必演的保留曲目，其中第二乐章的最后一首Hallelujah(哈利路亚）应该是大家所熟悉的

柴科夫斯基说：“亨德尔处理声部的技巧是无与伦比的大师，他向来不勉强使用合唱的声部手段，从来不超过声区的自然范围。他在合唱曲中创作出其他作曲家从来也做不到的绝妙的宏伟效果。”《弥赛亚》共57个分曲，其中混声四部合唱廿首，混声五部合唱曲一首。清唱剧《弥赛亚》分为三个部分。第一部分叙述耶稣诞生的经过，叫《预言与成就》；第二部分表现耶稣传布福音以及受难的经过，叫《受难与得胜》；第三部分是写耶稣复活的事，叫《复活与光荣》。每个部分都以合唱曲作为结束，最后在壮丽宏伟的赋格大合唱《阿门颂》中结束全曲。
