银行职员杰森因学历不高，受尽社会冷落，因此他一心望子成龙。而他年少无知的儿子汤姆却不能理解父亲苦心，不爱学习还经常惹祸，因此被学校开除。父亲及家人年复一年的劝说与关心不能感动家兴，他只想早点挣钱。

最终，家兴没有勇气和决心做“不孝子”，决定出国学习，以不负父亲的期望。但当他学习期满、返家前夕，父亲却因儿子留学归来高兴过度心脏病发而猝死。
